FUMIDAI_2
Wood Type: Pine
Date: c. 1920s–1950s

A FUMIDAI crafted from pine wood.
Simple in form, yet carrying a quiet but undeniable presence.
The worn marks carved by years of use.
Traces of white paint still remaining on its side.
Where did it live, and whose everyday life did it quietly serve?
Imagining these unseen stories is part of why I continue collecting FUMIDAI.
Old FUMIDAI were often made from materials such as pine, cedar, or cypress.
Chosen not by accident, but through necessity
for their lightness, strength, durability, and ease of craftsmanship required for everyday use.
What kind of wood was chosen, and why?
Perhaps within that choice lies something beyond form itself
a reflection of the household, the region, and the way people once lived.
A FUMIDAI is not simply a practical object.
To me, it feels like something that quietly carries the memory of everyday life from another time.
Through this account, I will slowly document the FUMIDAI I have collected over nearly five years.
