This piece is where my collection began.

In 2021, I found myself deeply drawn to the quiet beauty found in old Japanese tools and everyday handcrafted objects. Inspired by their forms and craftsmanship, I began designing a bag based on those ideas.

In 2022, that idea became reality as FUMIDAI BAG.

Designed around the structure and presence of the traditional Japanese fumidai (wooden step stool), the bag unexpectedly found its way into the hands of many people.

This very fumidai was also used in the visual campaign for that project, making it an object I hold with particular significance.

And before I realized it, this was where my journey of collecting antique fumidai began.

Its beautifully curved circular detail.
The brass tacks.
The carefully balanced proportions, thickness, and form of the top board.

At first glance, it appears to be nothing more than an ordinary household object.
Yet within it lives a beauty born entirely from function.

There is also a theory that the circular opening was once designed to hold a waste container.

An object that once stood quietly inside someone’s home,
supporting the rhythms of everyday life,
fulfilling its purpose without asking to be noticed.

Even after serving its role, these objects continue to remain, surviving beyond generations.

I find myself deeply drawn to that quiet persistence.

Handmade by anonymous craftsmen.
A form of beauty without a name, born within ordinary life.

From here, I hope to slowly uncover the stories held within FUMIDAI 
their origins, their history, and the culture quietly embedded within them.
